Is it worth repairing a broken vacuum?
In today's era of cheap appliances and products, is it really worth it to repair your broken vacuum cleaner? The main factor to consider when deciding to repair your vacuum or not is to see what the current price is to buy a new one. This will set your cap for how much you will spend.
After you have discovered what the current value of your make and model is, look up any vacuum repair stores in the area. This will let you check the basic amount it will cost you to get the vacuum repaired. This is where the price of the current vacuum comes into play, if you own a high price model, such as a Dyson, the repair price may be low enough for you to afford to have it repaired. However, if you own a lower price vacuum, such as a Hoover, you may want to just buy a new vacuum.
This ensures that it will not only fix your current problem, but it will also make sure all of your parts are brand new and in working order. When thinking about this choice, use an analogy of car wrecks and repair bills. If you own a BMW worth thirty thousand dollars and you get into a fender bender that will put you out three hundred dollars, it is much cheaper to have it repaired than buy a new BMW. If you have a three hundred dollar junker however, and you get into a front end wreck that leaves your car in near totaled state and would cost several thousand to get repaired, it is much more economical if you just buy a new car.
Beyond the simple economic side of it however, you have to consider the environmental impact that it may have. If your old vacuum is just going to go into a landfill then that is not good for the environment. If you threw out every bottle of water you bought just because of a defect in the label or bottle, the earth would be in a terrible state.
One excellent way to help the environment is to donate it to a group such as Good Will. This way it could be repaired by a group of dedicated volunteers and be given or sold to those less fortunate then ourselves. Ultimately, the decision to replace or repair your vacuum lays with you and the price of repair.
